Dave spikey gig at The Manchester Opera House full review start to finish

Someone once said "Why do we do this" well I think I got the answer, we do this dreaming of nights like last night, Yesterday was spent reading text and E-Mail messages just wishing me luck, Thanks guy's My guest on the night was my son Mike I was due there around 5-00pm but I got down to avoid the traffic around 4-30 called in (The Grapes) Liz Dawns pub for a coke round the corner from the opera house and strolled down around 4-55,it was only a few weeks ago I was in New York so to see the place lit up outside brought back memories of Broadway In the stage door we went and was directed to the main stage for a sound check, at this point I must confess I wasn't bothered about anything other than will my voice hold out because I had been rough with the flu I thought I would leave singing until I had to, I finished my sound check to the applause of a couple of people out there one being Dave Spikey who was having trouble with the Opera management team over putting leaflets out on every chair, they said he couldn't do it because it was a health & safety issue and Dave replies "Ho ye there’s nothing worse than them paper cuts is there" We was told we could watch the first half of the show from the gallery so up we went our mike had a white shirt on so everybody who came up was going to him and asking him where there seat was he got fed up with this after a while I went to the toilet and there was a large crowd near the door as I announced if you want to know where your seat is see the guy in the white shirt as I headed off to the toilet. The show started around 7-40 it was a variety show with a troop of dancers to kick it of followed by Dave for about 10 min then another comedian who done around 15 min then a comedy group called the four fat folkere they have a regular spot at the comedy store with songs like "I’m gay I’m gay but not in a Barrymore way" they were funny then Dave came back on for a set followed by a guy singer, I didn’t see him because that was my cue to get back down stairs, by this time my dressing room that belonged to Steve Mc Fadden for the Panto was packed out because it was everybody else's dressing room as well women and men,The Place was buzzing by now half the show had been done we got the call to go back stage and on came Gerry Sinclair he done a couple of his club songs then he introduced a girl singer while she was on he said to me just enjoy yourself never mind about the 5 min spot have a laugh and do what you want, he introduced me as a nugget that was found on his TV programme I asked him not to tell then where I am from so I got announced as a local lad, So I walked out to applause and I couldn’t see past the first 2 rows the lights were blinding I started off by telling them I come from a quaint little village called Ancoats and when they started laughing I said don’t laugh all my mates are robbing your houses while you are in here, then I was off on one my introduction to lend me a tenner struck a chord with most of them and the song went down a storm as soon as I realised that my voice was going to hold out I put loads more effort into it with the biggest laugh coming in the 4th verse about the floorboards in my lads bedroom, then that was that off I went and "Job done" We all went back to a place called Prohibition in Manchester told the doorman we was with the private party and half the pub was cordoned off for us so the commoners could see us but couldn't get in, Buckets of Champers were on offer I tried one then me and our Mike hit the Guinness “ You can take the lad out of Ancoats Ect" Then to end the night a very drunken girl got through the barrier came up to our little group and said to Dave Ay Ya I think you are very funny she said to Dave thanks he replied ye love that's the job description "go on be funny F*** off" he then slid off and left her there with us, So was you on with Dave tonight then Ye I replied I am also his tour manager we are off to The north Pole for Panto over Christmas that must be very exciting she said is it hard work being a tour manager by this time our mike had to leave rapid as I just laid it on making things up as I went along, I have never been in a pub like this before most people were drinking things with Ice Cream in it, it was a bit posh, so that was it I then done the rounds to say cheers and a Taxi home around 12-30,It was a pleasure to be a part of and if nothing else ever happens this night will be up there with the best of them, I thanked Dave I did try to return the favour by asking him to support me on my next gig but he just smiled and said I’m busy that night,(I didn't give him a night )
